The Chicken King – A different kind of craving

Neighbourhood gems can sometimes bring you pleasant surprises. My girls and I headed down to The Chicken King, a rather new name in the Singapore fast food market just this weekend for a lunch catch-up session.

Being back in the Toa Payoh area does bring me many feels..especially seeing new eateries spring up everywhere, TPY has been injected with many new vibes despite my remembrance of its old school, casual goings.

We found The Chicken King situated in the middle of a row of small eateries, occupying a clean and comfortable space. This restaurant (opened by the ones behind Orchid Live Seafood restaurant), serves up fried chicken in many unusual flavours. For variety’s sake, we ordered 2 types of chicken sets- with a waffle and fries respectively.

Signature flavour- Steven Chicken

When served, this was crispy and tender to the mouth on the inside. The chicken meat tasted fresh, and the sauce resembled a Korean take on fast food chicken, leaning towards the sweet side. Definitely refreshing on the palate. That day however, only thick cut fries were served.

There we go!- Buttermilk Chicken Waffles

The final product

The buttermilk chicken waffles was worth the try! A well-fried chicken cutlet on top of a waffle that was dense yet fluffy to the bite, paired with the Singaporean’s favourite salted egg yolk sauce. You could opt for buttermilk sauce as an alternate option as well.

Digging in

Overall, a satisfactory fast food outlet experience. The items surpassed expectations by offering new flavours that had the ‘shiok’ factor, and most importantly, wallet friendly. 🙂 Do head down if you are in the neighbourhood and craving for fast food with a twist (and if you are a fan of local flavours too).
